Nearby Universities. Sarasota is home to and surrounded by several institutes of higher education. At the Keiser University campus, right in Sarasota, students can pursue degrees in business, the culinary arts, education, and other disciplines. LECOM Bradenton in Lakewood Ranch is a school of osteopathic medicine and school of pharmacy. New College of Florida is an honors college for academically gifted students, 80 percent of whom are Floridians. And Ringling College of Art and Design nurtures students in the arts so that they may flourish with a creative career in fields like advertising, computer animations, and painting.

Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. Since 1970, the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall has been keeping the city of Sarasota entertained, starting with its very first production, Fiddler on the Roof. A variety of performers and entertainers have since graced the stage, including symphony orchestras, jazz ensembles, dance companies, and the best of Broadway’s plays and musicals. This landmark performance venue set along Sarasota’s bay front, went under a million-dollar renovation in 2000, rendering it larger and more comfortable for audiences and performers alike.

Powel Crosley Theatre and Museum. Located on the Powel Crosley Estate, or Seagate, the Powel Crosley Theatre is committed to bringing some of the world’s finest dramatic works to life, including those of Shakespeare, Poe, and Wilde. The Crosley Estate was the Mediterranean-style winter home of inventor and industrialist Powel Crosley, built for his wife Gwendolyn. Located on Sarasota Bay, this magnificent 11,000-square-foot mansion from the 1920s is on the Register of Historic Places.
Ringling Museum of Art. Located on Sarasota Bay in Florida, the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art has been the keeper of some of the area’s finest artwork since 1927. With collections that range from European, Asian, and American, the Ringling Museum is Florida’s official State Museum of Art.
